Peugeot Car Club of Victoria

Mike Jolley Mike Jolley, who died of prostate cancer in early March 2004, was a Peugeot person for his entire adult life. This connection began when his father bought a new Peugeot 404 in the mid-60s, and Mike realised that the Morris 10 he had been driving just didn’t cut the mustard. So, he bought himself a second-hand 403 and began to learn the ins and outs of these funny French cars. Mike and his dad would attend Peugeot Car Club of Victoria meetings, which were held in a room behind the State Library of Victoria. These were glory days for Peugeot, with the 404 winning the East African Safari rally several times, and PCCV members were showing that the cars perform just as well on Australian roads. After training as a teacher in special schools, Mike married another teacher, Lesley, and taught in Melbourne before taking a year off to study special schools in the UK and Sweden On their return they moved to Colac where Mike was officer-in-charge of the special education unit, later moving to Ballarat. They had two lovely daughters, Megan and Eve, who grew up to drive Peugeots as well. In the 1990s Mike gave teaching away and started a Peugeot service business. After some years working on Peugeots Mike decided it was time to relax, and he and Lesley retired to Torquay which many Ballarat people do. He joined the SES a Surfcoast art group. Retirement gave Mike more time to play with his own cars, rather than servicing those of other people. In 2003, Mike and Lesley took part in the PCCV’s Redex Rerun, a tribute to Peugeot’s win in the first Redex Trial in 1953. In 2006, PCCV also organised a rerun of the 1956 Ampol Trial, which was won by a Peugeot 403. Mike volunteered to join the rally as an official. He was a crossword wiz and contributed many Peugeot puzzles to the club magazine, Torque. Over the years Mike has restored several Peugeots, making them as good as new. When he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, he fought it as hard as anybody could. He sang the praises of the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and was a regular at PCFA group meetings. At the time of his death, he owned a Peugeot 405 diesel and he left instructions that it was to be sold, with the proceeds to be divided between PCCV and the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. His support for both organisations showed the sort of person Mike was: loyal and committed.
