Wayne's Strength and Journey
Every day, 79 Aussie men are diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Wayne was an inspiration to many. He loved being right lol. You certainly knew if he was
right !! If you where important to him you knew it. Wayne loved drag racing in his youth,
and was still drag racing when I met him on his 30th birthday. Being a man of honour, he
said "no more racing, I have a family now " Family was what he lived for. After his
prostate cancer diagnosis in 2011he became a great advocate for prostate cancer
awareness. He was eager to tell men, young and old, to get tested. “It’s just a blood test”
he’d say. He was also eager to get involved in clinical trials.
Throughout Wayne’s journey, the work of the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia’s
Prostate Cancer Support Nurses was so important to Wayne and those close to him. They
oered guidance through both the good times and the bad. They became family. There is
an incredible need for these amazing people to help men and their families aected by
prostate cancer. Sadly, some men are alone through this difficult journey, which makes
the support of the Prostate Cancer Support Nurses even more vital.
With the support of those around him, Wayne stayed so positive after his diagnosis. Of
course, he had times of doubt, but he never let it stay around too long. He’d contemplate
things for a few days, then got back into what he enjoyed most – gardening, Snooker, and
travelling to Bathurst, Newcastle, and Townsville Races. (to tick othe bucket list).
As a wife, and his family, it was a rollercoaster of emotions to see the man you love battle
prostate cancer. Wayne was the one who made it easier, even though he was going
through it himself. In honour of Wayne, I encourage you to tell the men in your life to get
tested. The earlier the disease is caught, the easier it is to treat. And like Wayne said, “It’s
just a blood test”. Listen to your bodies and gentleman, do what’s right for you.

When we lost Wayne, after a 10 year battle.
In 2021, to honour Wayne, the snooker club created the Wayne Ross Memorial Snooker Tournament which is held in October every year. "Unfortunately the Tournament is no longer, but we still remember Wayne through the fundraiser."
Wayne loved snooker and played with Westside HQ Snooker Club for over thirty years.
He loved the game. He continued to play even during his treatment, before he had to stop in early 2020.
“Even though he went through radiotherapy, chemotherapy, a trial, nothing was really working but he remained very positive about it all. He managed to live with prostate cancer for nearly 10 years.
“It’s great to be able to talk about Wayne and to encourage people to get tested,”

“We do it to raise funds and awareness of prostate cancer also to support the dedicated specialised NURSES.
“Now in our 6th year, It’s heartening to see the amount of men who come up to us and buy our raffle tickets and share their story and to say thank you,”
They have said things like ‘I wish someone had told me it was a simple as a blood test.’ It’s very moving to hear men tell their stories about their experiences with prostate cancer.
“Often there would be another person in line, and they would overhear and say: ‘I should talk to my dad about prostate cancer’,”
The Wayne Ross MEMORIAL Fundraiser is held over the month of October and participants can purchase raffle tickets or make a donation to help raise funds for PCFA.
There will be information on support groups as well.
Westside HQ Snooker Club & Westside HQ Club have managed to raise over $15,000 for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia since we started in 2021.
