Everesting for Mens Health on Two Wheels

I am about to take on possibly my hardest endurance challenge in memory of my Dad, who sadly did not live much past my current age.

Following a few half and one full Ironman, I’ve been training since December to do an Everesting (https://everesting.cc). The concept is simple: cycle up any hill without undulations until you’ve climbed 8,848 vertical meters—the height of Everest. You can take refreshment breaks, but no sleeping.

I want to draw attention to men’s health. My Dad got prostate cancer, which quickly spread. He and my Mom didn’t get to enjoy retirement & travel together. He didn’t get to meet or spend time with his 8 wonderful grandchildren, nor they with him. Dad lived a healthy life but was not diagnosed or treated early enough. Medicine and health support have come a long way since he died 28 years ago. Screening for prostate and bowel cancer is now simple and available, at least in the first world. Us men often ignore early warning signs, which can in time lead to heart attacks, various cancers, obesity, and dementia. It’s not too late, even for those out of shape; you don’t need to do crazy things like I do, just see your doctor and look after your health. If not for your sake, for your family.

If you’d like to support me, please do one of the following: send me a message, drop by on the day/night of my Everesting if you live nearby, or donate to charity. I’m raising funds for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA - Shane Hunter). The charity supports men and their families with prostate cancer and conducts great research. All donations are tax-deductible in Australia.

More importantly, please look after your own health or encourage your husband/partner, Dad, brother, son, or friend to check their health, particularly in middle age.

For my Everesting, I’ll be cycling solo up and down Brisbane’s iconic Mount Coo-tha, from near the botanical gardens entrance to near the Summit Lookout 46 times, most likely on the 20th or 21st of September, weather permitting. I estimate it will take up to 20 hours: 16 hours of cycling (80% steep uphill, 20% downhill) plus a few hours for refreshment breaks. I have been gradually building my training since December. My weekend rides include twelve 4-hour cycles, eight 6-hour cycles, four 8-hour (200km) cycles, and three 10-hour cycles—times exclude breaks. I’ve gradually increased the number of meters climbed—my 56/57-year-old body injures more easily these days!

And my greatest risk? Besides cars and fatigue, my biggest concern is if a magpie sets up a nest and starts swooping. For non-Aussies: Magpie Swooping an Australian Phenomenon. So if anybody would like to help me on the day… 😊

Thank you for taking the time to read this and for your support.

My Updates

Ever-resting!

Monday 23rd Sep

To let you know I did it 😊.  With a lot of support from you and so many people.

Very fortunate how well the day went; weather, no bike problems, etc, etc and no magpies!

The support on the day from family and friends, made it so much more enjoyable than a sufferfest.

And while it’s a bit late in my life for this, I’m having a bit of my time in the spotlight as I had a radio interview on Friday before the event and one on Monday after the event.  Both went to air.  Plus Channel 10 were there for an interview and lots of shots.  It may not  make it to airtime, but it was fun.  And the radio interviews should have generated good publicity for the charity.

As for the event itself.  I started at 4 am Saturday and finished at 12.30 am Sunday with about 3 hours cumulative breaks, including my niece getting me to wear a tutu 😊

I did a bit extra than was required, 6 extra laps and made it to 10,000 m vertical gain = 10km (it’s the next milestone in the Everesting world and my wife Sandy did know in advance it may be a later night than expected).  And almost 300 kms.

Thanks so much for going on this journey with me.
