Rallying for the Walnut: A 40-Year Friendship, a Car Rally, and One Prostate

Tuesday 20th Jan

I wanted to share how last year’s Prostate Cancer rally made me feel. Below is my attempt at a synopsis of the experience and the emotions it stirred in me:

There are few things in life that get two supposedly grown men in the latter years of life to dress in matching shirts, slap stickers on a car, and drive across the countryside shouting facts about prostates. But when your best mate of some 40 years gets diagnosed with prostate cancer, suddenly… it all makes sense.

Enter the Prostate Cancer Car Rally 2025 — part road trip, part rolling circus, part mission. It wasn’t just about raising awareness. For me, it was about my mate, Tony Geyer — the guy I served with in the Army, the guy who’s been like a brother ever since, and now, the guy who stared cancer in the face with his usual bullish charm and a stubborn refusal to stop cracking stupid jokes.

A Rally of a Different Kind

Up to now, Tony and I have never had a cross word to say to each other which given the time we have spent together, is something of a revelation. However, I can now say that you’ve never truly tested a friendship until you’ve spent 12 hours a day for 7 days, in a car with someone, trying to follow written rally card directions through country backroads while debating whether prostate exams should come with a free beer. (For the record, Tony thinks they should — whereas I think it should be at least a good bottle of red wine)

Along the route, we met the other teams — survivors, families, friends — all united by a walnut-sized organ most people never think about until it goes pear-shaped. There were tears. There was loads of laughter and, at one point, there was an optical illusion involving a mariachi band and tequila. (We’re still not sure why)

But what stood out most? The resilience. The humour. The unspoken bond between people who in the main, had all been blindsided by the same diagnosis and are now refusing to go quietly.

The dreaded PSA Debate

There is none - If you’re a man over 50, (or 40 if there is a family history of prostate cancer) or love someone who is, let me say this clearly: Get your PSA checked. Prostate cancer caught early is treatable. Caught late… not so much.

Tony’s diagnosis was a gut punch. But it was caught in time, and now he’s turning it into a mission: to make other men uncomfortable enough to get over themselves and book the appointment. These days it is a simple blood test to determine your Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), not the dreaded finger probe.

The Power of Friendship (and a Decent Car Stereo)

There’s something incredible about a friendship that spans some four decades — through military deployments, marriages (mine mainly), kids, bad decisions, worse haircuts, and now, cancer. Driving alongside Tony in that rally wasn’t just about awareness. It was about showing up. Laughing through it. And refusing to let fear drive.

We don’t know what the next few years will bring, but we do know this: we’ll face it like we’ve faced everything else — together, full throttle, and probably singing 70’s & 80s ballads (horribly off-key) at the top of our lungs.

Early detection saves lives. So, check your oil, rotate your tires, and get your prostate checked.

For Tony. For the 1 in 5 men who’ll face this. For the ride.

Cheers Russ

It's on again!!!!!!!!!!

Tuesday 20th Jan
Hey everyone,

In 2026, Tony & I will once again be participating in the Prostate Cancer Car Rally in order to raise much needed funds for prostate cancer.

This year, we will be roaming around the wonderful outback of South Australia.

We'll be passing thru the Flinders Ranges out onto the vastness of Arkaroola, along the Oodnadatta Track into the iconic and very quirky Coober Pedy and then onto Woomera.

Along the way, we will talk to all that will listen about this insidious disease called prostate cancer and what is needed to be done to help prevent it.

Come along for the ride as 2 old war horses once again saddle up to try to raise money for this wonderful cause.

Thank you to my Sponsors
