Hi my name is Marcus Lens, I have a beautiful wife and 3 early adult sons. In March this year, I joined a club no ones asks to be a part of. I was diagnosed with prostate cancer at the age of 53.

Mine appears to have been caught early, and I have options. But not every man does - because only 36% of prostate cancers in Australia are detected at Stage 1, when survival rates are at their highest.

A family history of prostate cancer doubles your risk if your father or brother has been diagnosed. That means my sons are already carrying a higher risk than most men their age. This ride is for them as much as anyone.

So I've decided to do something about it.

I'm embarking on a 2,000+ km bicycle ride from Perth to Exmouth, one of the most remote and beautiful stretches of coast in the country. Along the way I'll be spreading the word - because too many blokes still don't know their risk, a simple PSA blood test could change everything.

The long days in the saddle will also give me plenty of time for some soul searching - weighing up my treatment options and deciding the best path forward for me and my family.

Every dollar I raise goes to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) - with the vision "where no man dies of prostate cancer". I'm riding for that future!

My flight to Perth is booked on the 1st July to begin this journey. However, the date might change pending my PSA reading a week before and my dads palliative care situation (bowel cancer).

Warroora Station to Coral Bay

Sunday 13th Sep

1800+ KMs down, less than 200KMs to go. Made it to Warroora Station after a massive couple of days battling corrugation, sand and rocks. That 4WD track was HARD! No one knows if it's been ridden with a pushbike before, I can see why. 50kms of sometimes riding mostly pushing my 45kg bike through. But stoked to make it, had the best scones jam and cream at Warroora, went for a swim at Shack Beach in my jocks and hit the road to get back on bitumen. Spent the night camped behind bushes (trees don't exist here). Left earlyish and arrived in Coral Bay to buy more supplies and work out how to get to Yardie Creek without rattling my bike to bits 😂

Friday 11th Sep

Oh boy, today was hard in the heat! Left early at 5.45am but the sun was hot by 8.30am and because I was basically going walking pace because of the Gnaraloo corrugation, I didn't get to the 4WD track until around 9am. Then that was a mixed bag, rocky, sandy, corrugated I was on/off the bike every 50 metres, even stacked for the first time. Pushing 45kgs of bike and gear through sand was hard. By 3.30pm I called it 12kms short of Warroora staying at Amherst Point wild camping once more. Tomorrow will be better knowing the worst is behind me.

3 Mile Camp - Gnaraloo Station

Thursday 10th Sep

Couple of days spent battling the worst corrugation, slow going on sometimes sandy sometimes heavy limestone roads.

Tomorrow into the unknown on a 4WD track to Warroora Station or Warra as it's known. It's a bit of a mystery, think it could take a couple of days, lot's of walking through sand and some water crossings. Have lots of food and carrying 10 litres of water.

Because I've been out of range for a couple of days, I just found out a good mate of mine passed away on Tuesday morning, words can't express how I feel. RIP Grant, I'll miss our walks/talks and our regular Pivotonian movie nights. The rest of this ride is for Jedd, Lila and Ivy big hugs to you 💔

Arrived in Carnarvon

Sunday 6th Sep

Left Monkey Mia and wild Camped near Hamelin Pool, legs were tired from the previous day so could only muster 100km. Slept quite well as I was nicely hidden in a bushy area. Left around 7.30am, stopped at the Overlander again to grab a bite to eat and drink, then pushed on to Wooramel River Retreat 140km and enjoyed the night in the artesian baths. Rained over night but was clear by morning so set off around 8.30am and rode 119km to Carnarvon. Tomorrow heading to Quobba Station, then Red Bluff and Gnaraloo. I know there's no mobile reception, but I may be able to buy some wifi so might be offline for a bit.

Biggest day yet

Friday 4th Sep

215km yesterday, started at Billabong Roadhouse and ended at Monkey Mia. Wanted to see how the body would cope hauling 45kgs of bike and gear into a side headwind. Felt pretty good for the most part, mind plays tricks on you a bit, needed to stop a few times to refuel and recover. Won't be doing another big day like that unless absolutely necessary.

The Murchison

Wednesday 2nd Sep

Couple of good days riding. Checked out Natures Window and Skydeck, both great but too many people even though I arrived relatively early. Rode on to the Ross Graham lookup, only one couple there, was nice to walk down the river. Jumped back on the bike, only rode another 20km before finding a quiet wild camp spot, completed 110km by days end. Left said camp spot around 8am, rode along the highway to a Roadhouse 148km away, spending the night here. Will eat a bunch tonight!

Back in Kalbarri

Tuesday 1st Sep

After two days of travel I'm back in Kalbarri to complete the ride. Armed with a new high vis vest that serves two purposes; 1. Better visibility 2. Hopefully stops the small amount of abuse I received last time, fingers crossed drivers see the bigger picture.

Tuesday 4th Aug

Lost my dad on the 1st August after a long battle with Bowel Cancer. His will to live was incredible. I'm grateful that I came home and spent some quality time with you. Forever in my heart, I'll finish this ride in your memory.

Day 9/10 - Kalbarri

Saturday 11th Jul

Day 9/10 - Arrived in Kalbarri. 125km yesterday from Geraldton to Port Gregory, lots more hills than expected was a tough day in the saddle then a nice easy 63km to Kalbarri. Before setting off on this journey I mentioned my dad's battle with Bowel Cancer. We asked the oncologist whether me being away for 5 weeks was wise, the response was positive so I was able to set the wheels in motion. However, his health has deteriorated faster than expected so I'm heading home to be with him (currently on the bus from Kalbarri), the street name was a sign! The plan at this stage is to pause my ride and start from Kalbarri again in the near future. Thanks to all those that have donated, life doesn't always go as planned but I'm determined to see all this through ❤️

Day 6 - Arrived in Geraldton

Wednesday 8th Jul

Another beautiful WA day. Set off from Port Denison mid morning and arrived in Geraldton late afternoon after a couple of failed attempts to escape the main highway. Ended up finding a lovely stretch of smooth gravel that probably added an extra 15kms but it was worth it, barely any traffic and made the 85km enjoyable. First day without a sore bum....yay Saying that, have accepted a need for a rest day so day 7 in Geraldton is it 😀

Day 5 - Arrived in Port Denison

Monday 6th Jul

Wild Camped near Green Head, then set off relatively early to take advantage of the light wind. Ended up doing 112km listening to my Spotify playlist. A beautiful WA day indeed.

Day 3 - Cervantes

Sunday 5th Jul

Brutal 104km into a solid side headwind. I normally only drink the small water bottles, but today I used them all and couldn't refill for the last 40km. Visited the Pinnacles, cool but a bit touristy. Haven't seen a single cyclist in either direction, I must be crazy, hit the wall 3-4 times today, amazing what you can do when you have to. Please anyone holding off donating, please do it, I need your support to complete this, my emotions are running riot. I'm doing this for all men who are and will be touched by prostate cancer.

Friday 3rd Jul

Got a little lost today, ended up doing an extra 15km thanks to Google Maps taking me through new estates in Yanchep where roads are not complete. Laughed it off and kept pedaling to arrive at my first night in time to catch my first sunset of the trip. "If you're not hurting you're not riding hard enough. If you're not hungry, you've eaten too much. If you're not cold you're carrying too many clothes. If you know you will succeed it's too easy."

Dry run

Monday 25th May

This is all new to me, I'm not a cyclist, I've never bike toured/packed so I thought I'd better do a dry run to try out the bike and all the gear.

Rode from home in Jan Juc to a quiet campground nestled in the Great Otway National Park. Met 3 lovely bikepackers that provided plenty of tips. Need to get more klms into the legs in the next few weeks!
